2011-14 MIT Pappalardo Fellowships in Physics, USA

The mission of the MIT Pappalardo Fellowships in Physics is to sustain a distinguished postdoctoral program that identifies, recruits and supports the most talented and promising young physicists at an early stage in their careers. This initiative is made possible by the support of Mr. A. Neil Pappalardo (EE ’64), an MIT alumnus with a long history of generosity to both the Institute and the Department of Physics.

Each year, the program appoints three new Fellows for a three-year term each, via its annual competition. All Pappalardo Fellows are provided with:

•independent, unrestricted choice of research focus and direction within the MIT Department of Physics, throughout their three-year fellowship appointment;
•active faculty mentoring fostered by weekly luncheons and monthly dinners with the Department’s faculty, throughout the academic year;
•a competitive annual stipend [$62,200 for first-year Fellows in the 2011-12 academic year] with an annual cost-of-living increase, combined with $5,000 per academic year in untaxed, discretionary research funds; and
MIT Affiliate Health Plan insurance coverage for Fellows and their dependents.

To participate in the Pappalardo Fellowships competition, a candidate must be nominated by a faculty member or senior researcher in physics, astronomy or related fields. Self-nominated applicants cannot be accepted.

The Executive Committee of the MIT Pappalardo Fellowships in Physics invites faculty and senior researchers within the international community of physics, astronomy or related fields to submit nominations for the 2011-2014 MIT Pappalardo Fellowships in Physics competition.

Nominees must be young men or women of exceptional ability who currently have or will have received a doctoral degree in physics, astronomy or related fields by September 1, 2011.

Upon receipt of a validated Pappalardo Fellowships nomination from a faculty member or senior researcher within the international community of physics, astronomy or related fields, the Fellowships Office will mail the nominee, via first-class mail, a Fellowship application packet containing an application form and cover letter with instructions.

All required application materials must be mailed by either first-class or overnight mail directly to the Fellowships Office in a timely manner, so that all items arrive NO LATER than 5:00 pm on FRIDAY, OCTOBER 15, 2010.

Science guru's other first prize

Sir Paul Callaghan considers himself a lucky man. Not because he's the leader of the team that has won this year's Prime Minister's Science Prize of $500,000.

He's won prizes before, plenty of them - the Ampere Prize, the Rutherford Medal and the Gunther Laukien Prize among them.

Nor does he link his luck to the fact that his team's work in the rarefied world of nuclear magnetic resonance is so widely published - 250 scientific papers between the five of them with a citation "h-index" of 46, putting them up with Nobel Prize winners.

"I've been hugely well recognised and I sometimes wonder why - I've been lucky that way," he says with typical modesty.

The reason Sir Paul regards himself as lucky is that he's still here. Diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2008, he had surgery and chemotherapy, but the outlook wasn't great.

"The tumour had got through the wall and spread cells into my abdominal cavity. I had multiple tumours throughout my peritoneum."

It was a fatal condition with no cure.

Scholarship Program in India for Internship

The Centre for Social Impact is offering a scholarship to attend the PRIA International Internship Program, one of only 25 places worldwide.

This inspirational program will provide the CSI Scholarship recipient with the opportunity to learn about development issues on the ground as part of an eight week course based in Delhi and at two different regional sites in India from September to November 2010.

2009 CSI PRIA Scholarship recipient, Keya Saha-Chaudhury, said the opportunity to gain exposure to Indian NGOs working with local communities was invaluable.

"The internship taught me a lot about rural life and local self governance structures in India but it was the stories from the communities that taught me the most. Both the organisations I worked with were focused on empowering communities to take responsibility for their own development, by building their capacity to participate in public processes and assert their rights," said Ms Saha-Chaudhury.

"There is no doubt that many challenges still face India but what inspired me was seeing that change was happening, and that Indians were leading this change... The model of seeing communities as change agents rather than mere beneficiaries of outside help is something I think we in the ‘west' can learn from," she said.

The CSI scholarship is open to people with a position in a not-for-profit or volunteer organisation, those connected with citizen engagement in the community, or to university students passionate about community engagement.

The CSI scholarship will provide:

• Return economy class airfare between your home city in Australia and New Delhi • The PRIA fee of US $2,800 to attend the program and stay on the PRIA campus • $500 towards out-of-pocket expenses.

PRIA will provide:

• Cost of stay (twin share basis) for the entire period of internship • Travel to and within field sites • Food for stay in Delhi (note interns bear the cost of food during the 6 week fieldwork period, at around US$6 per day) The closing date for CSI Scholarship applications for the PRIA International Internship Program is 30 June 2010.

CSI will propose to PRIA that the winner of the CSI Scholarship be accepted into the PRIA International Internship Programme 2010. Admission is not guaranteed by CSI and should admission not be obtained the scholarship will not be provided to the applicant.
The CSI Scholarship will provide a return economy airfare to Delhi, the PRIA fee of US $2,800 to attend the program and stay on the PRIA campus and $500 towards out-of-pocket expenses.
