The studentship is associated with an AHRC-funded research project: ‘The Landscape Concept in Russian Scientific Thought, c1880s - 1991' which is led by Dr Jonathan Oldfield (University of Glasgow) and Dr Denis Shaw (University of Birmingham).
The PhD research will be concerned with the development of the community of landscape and environmental scientists in the city of St. Petersburg during the late tsarist and early Soviet periods, the institutions in which they worked, and the research and associated scientific practices in which they were engaged. The successful applicant will be expected to spend an extended period working in the relevant libraries and archives in St. Petersburg.
The student will be based in the Department for Central and East European Studies, University of Glasgow, and co-supervised by Dr Jonathan Oldfield (University of Glasgow) and Dr Denis Shaw (University of Birmingham).
Applicants are welcome from a range of disciplinary backgrounds including - but not restricted to - area studies, geography, history, and language studies. Applicants should possess good Russian language skills and hold a good Honours degree. A relevant Masters qualification would be desirable.
